Back to My Mac

May 31, 2019:
Apple announces the full shutdown of the feature Back to My Mac for July 1, 2019.

Back to My Mac was a simple VPN server solution built into many versions of macOS, based on Apple-ID authentication, Wide-Area Bonjour and IPSec. It had been removed already from macOS 10.14 Mojave in 2018. Apple announced today that they will additionally disable Back to My Mac for older operating systems as well, namely

  • Mac OS X Leopard,
  • Mac OS X Snow Leopard,
  • Mac OS X Lion,
  • OS X Mountain Lion,
  • OS X Mavericks,
  • OS X Yosemite,
  • OS X El Capitan,
  • macOS Sierra,
  • macOS High Sierra.

The service is planned to be shut down on July 1, 2019. It was originally introduced as part of ".Mac" on October 26, 2007.

Apple releases new software via macOS Software Update:

  • Mobile Device package version 1 (Update Product ID: 041-36263)
  • Safari Technology Preview version 83 (Update Product ID: 041-67307 / 041-69048)
The device support update ensures proper updating and restoring for iOS devices using iTunes for Mac. The mobile device package provides updated icons and on-demand software support for new portable devices in macOS. Safari Technology Preview allows users to get a sneak peek at upcoming web technologies in macOS and experiment with these technologies in websites and extensions.

The update ensures proper updating and restoring for iOS devices using iTunes for Mac.

The operating systems OS X 10.11 and macOS 10.12 or later can use this update.

  • BridgeOS Customer Update (Update Product ID: 041-64749)

BridgeOS is the secondary hardware management operating system running on the Apple T2 processors of selected Macintosh model series.

The re-released versions of macOS 10.14.5 address a firmware issue affecting 15-inch MacBook Pro computers with T2 Security Chip.

TinkerTool System 6

May 8, 2019:
We are releasing TinkerTool System 6 version 6.4:

  • Added new feature to display “reveal in Finder” buttons for objects in the preflight list shown before deleting files as part of a clean-up operation.
  • Added new feature to check a file system hierarchy against a user-specified limit for the length of absolute or relative paths.
  • Added new warning feature for the ACL pane that makes the user aware if a selected file system may not support ACL permissions or uses virtual permission settings only. A new info panel offers guidance for inexperienced users.
  • When propagating permissions onto a large folder hierarchy, the temporary memory consumption has been greatly reduced for specific use cases.
  • Corrected an issue where specific locale settings of the user account could prevent a request to automatically free storage space of APFS Time Machine snapshots by a specified size to take any noticeable effect.
